Brief History of the Ichhamati Milk Union

The Ichhamati Milk Union a district level all women co-operative Society started its operation in the year 1993 in the district of North 24 Parganas. It was formed with a goal to improve the Socio economic conditions of the village level women milk producers by way of implementation of Women Dairy Co-operative Project Phase-I (WDCP), financed by Govt. of India through West Bengal Co-op. Milk Producers’ Federation Ltd (WBCMPF Ltd.) It was register under West Bengal Co-operative Society Acts. Vide Reg. No.-3/IMU( N-24 Pgs) of 1997 Date: 31.07.1997 for 24 Pgs.

The Union has demonstrated exemplary Women Leadership and empowerment with their active participation and involvement. The IMUL has so far covered 572 villages in 10 community blocks and developed a constituency of approximately 12000 Women membership in the entire district and build up 6 chilling plants & I product plant for processing of raw milk in to milk product. Milk union used to procure average 12,000 lts of milk per day through137 nos. of Women Milk Producers’ Co-operative Society & 4 nos of Self Help Group (SHG) from producers level and is infusing on an average above Rs. 1.5 Core per month in the rural economy of the district directly and thus contributing to income generation activity for the village women. Besides, milk union provides margin money for cattle acquisition, managerial subsidy, operational deficit, and Cattle Insurance facilities to the producer members. As a part of technical input activities, this union has supplied 202.5 MTs of balanced Cattle feed, 2.25 MTs of Mineral Mixture and 9 MTs of seasonal fodder seed to the producer member through respective Societies in last year at free of cost.

As a step towards achieving self-reliance, to produce value added fresh milk products a small milk product factory  as wellas  processing unit has been started at Berachampa village under Deganga Block under the scheme Intensive Dairy Development Project-IV in the Year 2014. with a monthly production capacity of 195.00 Tones of Ichhamati Lassi, 2.5 Tones of Ichhamati Kheer Peda,1.00 Tones of Ichhamati Ghee and 3.00 Tones of Ichhamati Paneer. Recently we  have  launched Sour curd.The plant is in continuous operation since inauguration in 2005. The union is also planning of starting its own full fledged dairy for marketing of Liquid milk along with milk products for plugging back maximum share of consumer’s rupee to our producer members.
